Lagos, Nigeria – In a highly anticipated ruling delivered on Friday, July 11, 2025, the Coroner’s Court in Ikorodu, Lagos, attributed the untimely death of popular Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, famously known as Mohbad, to medical negligence. While ruling out foul play or homicide, Magistrate C.A. Shotobi (also known as Adedayo Shotobi) recommended the criminal prosecution of auxiliary nurse Feyisayo Ogedengbe for her role in the singer’s demise.

Magistrate Shotobi stated that while a definitive cause of death could not be certified, a clear link was drawn from the sudden adverse reaction the deceased experienced after being injected by the nurse. The court found Ms. Ogedengbe’s actions to be “unlawful and professionally negligent,” noting she administered an injection without a doctor’s prescription. The nurse had previously admitted during the inquest to giving Mohbad a tetanus injection at his residence.
The Coroner’s report did not spare Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, criticizing his decision to hastily bury the singer without demanding an autopsy, labeling the act as “undignified.” The singer’s wife, Omowunmi, also faced chastisement for failing to seek adequate professional medical care for Mohbad for over 15 hours, neglecting proper documentation of events, and not speaking out against the father’s handling of the corpse.
Despite earlier allegations of harassment and a pre-death police petition by Mohbad, the Coroner found no direct correlation between his death and his former promoter, Azeez Fashola (aka Naira Marley), or associate, Sam Larry. The court, however, recommended that Mohbad’s pre-death petition to the police be properly investigated. This comes as Mohbad’s father has reportedly appealed a separate court decision that upheld the Directorate of Public Prosecutions’ (DPP) legal advice absolving Naira Marley and Sam Larry.
Beyond the immediate circumstances of Mohbad’s death, Magistrate Shotobi raised concerns over systemic lapses in the regulation of the health sector, highlighting how such shortcomings enable unlicensed individuals to practice without scrutiny. The Coroner also advised for a reburial of Mohbad’s remains, in line with public health and legal protocols, to allow the late singer to finally rest.
The inquest, which spanned nearly two years and heard from nineteen witnesses, concluded that Mohbad suffered turbulent moments leading to his death, having been failed by various entities including his family, public institutions, and the music industry. The court also criticized the role of social media influencers and content creators for misrepresenting facts during the proceedings.
