Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, the sole British survivor of the Air India Flight AI 171 crash near Ahmedabad that killed 279 people, has spoken publicly for the first time about his harrowing experience and the overwhelming guilt he feels over losing his brother Ajay in the disaster.
Ramesh, 40, was seated in 11A, an emergency exit row seat, while his brother Ajay was across the aisle in 11J. He had tried to secure seats together for them but was unable to, as other passengers had already taken part of the row. Vishwash survived by crawling through a hole in the mangled fuselage after the Boeing 787 Dreamliner slammed into a building and exploded shortly after takeoff.
Physically recovering at his family home in Diu, India, Ramesh described his escape as a miracle but is deeply troubled by survivor’s guilt. He said, “If we had been sat together we both might have survived” and expressed constant anguish over not being able to save his brother. Despite his injuries, he bravely tried to re-enter the burning wreckage to find Ajay before paramedics intervened.
Ramesh’s story has inspired both awe and skepticism online, with some questioning how he could walk away with relatively minor injuries while all others perished. However, medical staff confirmed he sustained multiple injuries but is out of danger.
The tragedy has deeply affected the community in Leicester, where Vishwash lives with his wife and young son, and in his ancestral village of Diu, where he and Ajay ran a fishing business. The family and friends continue to mourn Ajay and the other victims, while supporting Vishwash through his physical and emotional recovery.

This extraordinary survival story highlights the complex psychological impact on sole survivors of mass disasters, including intense survivor’s guilt and the struggle to find meaning after such a traumatic event.
