In a significant breakthrough for Kenya’s agricultural trade, Uasin Gishu County has successfully exported 50 premium dairy cows to Lagos, Nigeria, marking a new era in cross-border livestock commerce between East and West Africa.
The consignment, airlifted from Eldoret International Airport, features cows meticulously selected from smallholder farmers—highlighting both the prowess of Kenya’s local dairy industry and its capacity to meet international quality standards. This achievement follows sustained investments in livestock farming by the county government, such as rehabilitating cattle dips, providing subsidized artificial insemination, and strengthening agricultural extension services for local farmers.

Dr. Jonathan Chelilum, Governor of Uasin Gishu County, described the initiative as a “major milestone,” emphasizing that it showcases the growing strength and export potential of Kenyan farmers. “Step by step, we are transforming dairy farming into a thriving enterprise and opening new markets for our people,” he stated.
The exported herd was part of a collaboration between the county government and private sector stakeholders, aiming to boost farmers’ incomes and elevate Kenya’s profile as a key supplier of high-quality dairy livestock on the continent. The move is anticipated to benefit not only local breeders but also serve as a catalyst for similar partnerships across Africa, strengthening agricultural value chains and regional food security.

The cows’ arrival in Lagos signals Nigeria’s growing interest in improving its local milk production capabilities, with officials expressing optimism that the imported Kenyan breeds will help upgrade the genetic pool of local stock and enhance dairy yields.
The trade agreement sets a precedent in regional agricultural cooperation and demonstrates how Kenyan counties are moving from subsistence to commercially viable dairy farming—providing a model for innovation and export-led growth in livestock agriculture.
