Nearly a year after the tragic murder of Christiana Idowu, a brilliant 300-level student of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), her grieving father, Idowu Oluwafemi, has appealed to Nigerians for help over what he describes as a stalled justice process. Christiana was abducted in August 2024 while traveling from her home in Itaoluwo, Ikorodu to the University of Lagos where she was undergoing industrial training. Her suspected killer, 23-year-old Ayomide Adeleye, a philosophy student at Olabisi Onabanjo University, was arrested after confessing to the crime, reportedly committed due to financial difficulties.
According to reports, Adeleye lured Christiana to his home under the pretense of fixing her phone, strangled her, and extorted N360,000 from her mother while deceitfully pretending Christiana was still alive. The police confirmed Adeleye’s arrest following intelligence tracing his betting account linked to his national identification details.
Despite Adeleye’s confession and arrest, Idowu Oluwafemi expressed deep frustration in a video statement over the lack of updates on the case. He remains uncertain whether Adeleye has been released, imploring Nigerians to assist in seeking justice for his daughter, emphasizing her brilliance and promising not to allow the case to be forgotten.
In response, the Nigerian Correctional Service has affirmed that Adeleye remains in lawful detention at the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, Lagos. He was officially remanded in custody on September 26, 2024, by Magistrate Court 13A in Ogba, Lagos State and has since been awaiting advice from the Department of Public Prosecution. The Nigerian Correctional Service publicly dismissed rumors of Adeleye’s release, confirming his continued detention as of early January 2025.
The case remains a tragic reminder of ongoing security challenges faced by students and families, and the urgent need for judicial processes to be transparent and prompt in delivering justice to victims such as Christiana Idowu.
This update highlights the ongoing situation and the father’s plea for public support, as the accused awaits further legal proceedings in custody.
