Abakaliki,Ebonyi State– In a significant boost to the healthcare sector, Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has announced a substantial increase in the salaries of newly-employed medical doctors working in the state’s general hospitals. Effective immediately, their minimum monthly salary has been raised from N150,000 to N500,000.
The governor made this announcement during the flag-off of the state’s health activation initiative, a program that also marks the commencement of a drug revolving fund and the distribution of essential medical equipment to general hospitals across Ebonyi State.
Governor Nwifuru emphasized his administration’s unwavering commitment to revitalizing the state’s healthcare system, aligning with the health pillar of his “People’s Charter of Needs.” He revealed that the state government has invested over N1 billion in procuring vital medical equipment, which were distributed at the event.
Addressing the critical issue of human resource shortages within the health sector, Governor Nwifuru stated that 195 healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and laboratory scientists, have recently been recruited and deployed to general hospitals to enhance service delivery for the people of Ebonyi State.
“This event is not just a ceremony—it is a declaration of our administration’s commitment to revitalizing the healthcare system of our dear state,” Governor Nwifuru affirmed. “It is a testament to our resolve to deliver on the health pillar of our People’s Charter of Needs.”
This significant salary increase is expected to attract and retain qualified medical professionals, ensuring improved healthcare services and a reduction in medical tourism outside the state. The governor has previously advocated for enhanced remuneration for health workers to combat the migration of medical professionals seeking better opportunities elsewhere.
This move comes after the state government had earlier directed the payment of a N150,000 monthly allowance to all medical doctors in the state. The current increase for newly-employed doctors signifies a further commitment to prioritizing the healthcare sector under Governor Nwifuru’s leadership.
