Enugu – April 17, 2025:
The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, has expressed optimism that the reconstruction of the Eastern Railway Line could be completed before 2027. Speaking during his familiarisation tour of the Eastern District in Enugu, Opeifa affirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to reviving what was once Nigeria’s most vibrant rail corridor.
“We are hopeful that it will be done before 2027 as the president is desirous to deliver it and it will be a good thing for it to be ready before 2027. I can tell you, activities will begin soon. Eastern rail will come back very soon but there is no timeline as the timeline is based on weather and fund releases,” Opeifa stated.
He revealed that contracts are in place for the rehabilitation of the line from Port Harcourt to Enugu, with ongoing plans to restore services from Port Harcourt to Onne and from Aba to Enugu. The NRC boss noted that funding issues had delayed progress but have now been resolved.
Opeifa dismissed rumours that work was diverted from the Eastern District to Gombe State, clarifying that contracts cannot be arbitrarily relocated. He also addressed concerns about NRC property in Enugu, explaining that lands are leased, not sold, and any encroachment will be addressed.
On the recent demolition of NRC training schools by the Enugu State Government, Opeifa said discussions are ongoing to resolve the matter. He assured staff that training facilities nationwide would be revived to support career advancement.
Opeifa urged Nigerians to protect railway assets, warning against treating them as scrap. “Anyone calling to buy them as scrap is a scammer while those involved in the act will be punished,” he warned.
The Eastern Rail Line project, initially flagged off in March 2021, was designed to be funded by an 85% foreign loan and a 15% federal government counterpart contribution. While the government’s share has enabled work on the Port Harcourt-Aba section, other stretches remain stalled due to funding challenges and the adoption of a narrow-gauge system, unlike the standard gauge in other regions.
President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s resolve to complete the Eastern Rail Line, emphasizing its importance for national integration and economic growth.
