Lagos, Nigeria – A Sunday morning crash at Alausa, Ikeja, left a couple and two other passengers injured after a commercial bus, driven by a visibly intoxicated driver, rammed into a streetlight. The incident, which caused widespread alarm, has reignited concerns about the menace of alcohol-impaired driving on Lagos roads.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the fully loaded commercial bus, painted in Lagos colours and bearing registration number KTU 69 YJ, was clearly under the influence of alcohol before losing control and colliding with the median streetlight. The ferocity of the impact resulted in significant injuries to several passengers, particularly a couple seated in the middle row.
Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), confirmed that preliminary investigations pointed to the driver’s heavy intoxication as the cause of the crash.
LASTMA officials responded swiftly to the scene, praised for their coordinated and professional intervention. Four victims – the couple, a male, and a female passenger – were quickly extricated from the wreckage. They received immediate on-site emergency care to stabilize their conditions before being transferred to the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS). The injured were subsequently taken to the Trauma and Emergency Centre at the Toll Gate for specialized medical treatment. Fortunately, other passengers on board sustained no serious injuries.
Officers from the Alausa Division of the Nigeria Police Force also secured the accident site during the rescue operation, ensuring public safety and preserving evidence for further investigation.
Bakare-Oki strongly condemned the reckless endangerment posed by alcohol-impaired driving, reiterating LASTMA’s unwavering commitment to addressing this pervasive issue. He highlighted the continuous efforts of LASTMA’s Monitoring and Surveillance Unit, which actively engages drivers in motor parks across the state through its “Don’t Drink and Drive” campaign, an ongoing initiative aimed at curbing such dangerous infractions and promoting road safety. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of responsible driving and adherence to traffic regulations to prevent needless casualties on the state’s busy thoroughfares.
