Christina Formella, a former special education teacher at Downers Grove South High School near Chicago, is now facing 55 charges, including aggravated sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual abuse, and grooming, related to a disturbing sexual relationship with a male student starting when he was 14 years old. Prosecutors allege she engaged in over 45 sexual acts with the student, including encounters at school and at her home during school hours.
Despite the severity and volume of charges, Formella’s husband, Michael Formella, was seen holding her hand as they entered DuPage County Circuit Court with their legal team, showing public support amid the allegations. Prosecutors revealed that Christina had told the teen she never intended to marry Michael and planned to leave him, even hinting at inheriting millions of dollars, though Michael claims he was unaware of the affair.
The case expanded after authorities discovered hundreds of texts and notes between Formella and the student, revealing a prolonged and manipulative relationship. Christina initially claimed the teen was stalking her and that her husband knew about the situation, but Michael told investigators he only knew the boy as a soccer player and was unaware of the abuse.
Formella pleaded not guilty to the new charges and remains out on bail under strict conditions, including wearing an ankle monitor and restrictions on contact with the victim. Prosecutors have urged the court to revoke her bail, but the judge allowed her to remain free pending trial. If convicted, Christina Formella faces up to 60 years in prison for crime
