Nigeria’s 2023 population and housing census earlier scheduled for end of this month has been shifted to May, 2023.
Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed announced this at the State House, Abuja, on Wednesday.
He said the decision to reschedule was necessitated by last week’s decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to reschedule the Governorship and Houses of Assembly elections to March 18.
He also said the Council approved N2.8 billion for the National Population Commission (NPC) to procure some software to be used for the conduct of the census.
He said, “There was a memo presented by the National Population Commission, seeking some software to allow them to conduct the census in May this year.”
“I believe because of the rescheduling of the elections; they cannot commence the census as scheduled.
They (National Population Commission) sought the council’s approval for a contract to procure software for the census at N2.8bn”.
The Federal Government has now announced May 2023 as the new date for the census.
