The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has cracked down on an alleged cybercrime syndicate, arraigning three individuals before Justice S.O. Ibrahim of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The defendants—identified as Raymond Charles Yafetus, Auwal Ibrahim, and Babangida Yahaya Ibrahim—face a three-count charge centered on criminal conspiracy, cybercrime, impersonation, and obtaining money under false pretences.
According to the anti-graft agency, the accused persons capitalized on the prominent digital footprint of famous Nigerian blogger and influencer, Adekunle Tunde Olaoluwa (widely known as Tunde Ednut), to orchestrate a massive financial heist. Investigators revealed that between April and June 2026, the suspects fraudulently assumed the celebrity’s identity, setting up unauthorized bank accounts across various financial institutions in Nigeria.
Using the fake profiles and deceptive online presence, the syndicate allegedly defrauded unsuspecting members of the public, raking in a staggering total of N18,264,700. The charges contravene Section 22(2)(b)(ii) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015, and are punishable under Section 22(b)(iv) of the same legislation.
During the court proceedings, the defendants entered a plea of “not guilty” to all charges leveled against them. Following their plea, the prosecution counsel, Elizabeth Alabi, requested a trial date and prayed the court to remand the defendants at the Kuje Correctional Centre.
Justice Ibrahim granted the prosecution’s application, ordering that the trio be remanded at the correctional facility. The case has been adjourned until November 17, 2026, for the commencement of trial.
