The glittering international career of Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo appears to have reached a tumultuous and irreversible end, following a severe fallout with national team coach Jorge Jesus that has left his family and fans reeling.
Ronaldo, 41, abruptly left the national training camp during the recent international break over what he described as broken promises regarding his playing time. The tipping point came when the veteran forward was left unused on the bench during Portugal’s 2-1 UEFA Nations League victory over Norway.
In response to the walkout, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) acted swiftly, initiating formal disciplinary proceedings and handing the country’s all-time leading scorer a provisional suspension. The case has been marked as urgent, threatening to sideline the Al-Nassr star for the remainder of the year’s international fixtures, including upcoming matches against Denmark and Wales.
Speaking publicly at a book launch event in Lisbon, Ronaldo’s sister, Katia Aveiro, cast grave doubts on any potential reconciliation or return to the national setup.
”It’s more likely a no than a yes,” Aveiro said when pressed on whether her brother would play for Portugal again. “I think both are hurt; it was a situation they experienced, not me. When we’re betrayed, it’s very difficult to go back to normal.”
Aveiro also expressed deep sorrow over how public sentiment has shifted against the legendary talisman, noting that critics seem eager to overlook his historic contributions of 146 goals across a record 234 appearances.
The sentiment was echoed by their mother, Dolores Aveiro, who lamented that her son was not being valued appropriately in the twilight of his career, remarking that he deserved to leave through the front door rather than being forced out.
While Ronaldo has since offered an apology to his teammates for abandoning the squad, the FPF’s Disciplinary Investigation Committee continues its confidential review. Under federation regulations, an unjustified departure from international duty can carry a suspension ranging from one to six months, effectively casting a permanent shadow over the final chapter of one of football’s most decorated international careers.
