The United States Department of Defense plans to livestream the scheduled execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, the former Army psychiatrist convicted of killing 13 people in the 2009 Fort Hood shooting.

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth’s declares that the public should be able to watch the punishment carried out.

The announcement has reopened debate about the purpose of capital punishment, the limits of public access to state executions and whether broadcasting a death sentence strengthens accountability or turns the administration of justice into a public spectacle.

The Pentagon said the execution by firing squad would be livestreamed, with further details to be provided. The execution is scheduled for December 3, 2026, at Fort Hood, Texas, subject to the applicable legal and procedural requirements, ValidViewNetwork reports.

THE 2009 FORT HOOD SHOOTING

Hasan, a former US Army major and psychiatrist, opened fire at the Fort Hood military base in Texas on November 5, 2009. The attack killed 13 people and wounded 32 others. The shooting took place at a military processing centre and became one of the deadliest attacks on a US military installation.

A military jury convicted Hasan in 2013 of premeditated murder and attempted murder. He was sentenced to death.

President Donald Trump approved the execution by firing squad in October 2026 following a recommendation from Hegseth. If carried out as scheduled, the execution would mark the first US military execution since 1961 and the first military firing-squad execution since 1945.

The case has remained significant because of the scale of the killings, the military setting and the prolonged legal process surrounding Hasan’s sentence.

WHY HEGSETH WANTS THE EXECUTION MADE PUBLIC

Hegseth said the public should be able to watch the execution so that people understand the serious consequences of crimes such as the Fort Hood shooting.

The Pentagon’s decision to livestream the event represents a significant departure from the modern practice of conducting executions privately or allowing only a limited group of authorised witnesses to attend.

Supporters of the plan may argue that public access would demonstrate that the state is carrying out a sentence imposed through the military justice system. They may also contend that visibility reinforces the seriousness of the offence and the consequences of an attack that killed military personnel and wounded dozens of others.

However, the argument that a public execution will deter future violence requires evidence. The fact that a punishment is visible does not automatically establish that it will prevent future crimes.

Deterrence depends on several factors, including the likelihood of detection, the perceived certainty of punishment and the circumstances influencing an offender’s actions.

WHEN JUSTICE BECOMES A SPECTACLE

The decision raises a separate question: does the public need to watch a person die to understand the seriousness of murder?

For decades, executions in the United States have generally been conducted without being broadcast to the public.

Historically, public executions attracted large crowds and were sometimes presented as warnings against criminal conduct. Over time, the practice largely disappeared as governments moved towards private execution procedures.

The proposed livestream has therefore revived concerns about whether the state is returning to a form of punishment in which the spectacle itself becomes part of the message.

Critics may question whether broadcasting the event serves a legitimate public purpose or risks reducing the death of a condemned person to a form of political theatre. The victims and survivors of the Fort Hood shooting deserve recognition, and the seriousness of the crime should not be minimised.

But acknowledging the suffering caused by the attack does not eliminate the need to examine the principles governing punishment.

TRANSPARENCY AND HUMAN DIGNITY

Public access to state action can strengthen accountability, particularly when governments exercise powers that affect life and death.

However, transparency does not necessarily require broadcasting every moment of an execution. A government can disclose the legal authority for a sentence, publish information about the process, identify the officials responsible and provide an independent account of whether the execution complied with established procedures.

Those measures can support public accountability without necessarily turning the execution itself into a public broadcast.

The proposed livestream therefore raises questions about the distinction between allowing citizens to scrutinise state power and inviting them to watch the physical act of punishment.

It also raises practical questions about the rules governing the broadcast, the intended audience and the safeguards that will apply.

THE MILITARY JUSTICE QUESTION

The case also highlights the distinctive nature of military justice. Hasan was tried by a military court for offences committed at a military installation. His sentence was imposed through that system, and the execution requires the relevant legal authorisations.

The fact that the sentence has received presidential approval does not remove the importance of complying with all applicable procedures before it is carried out.

The authorities must ensure that the execution proceeds only when the legal requirements have been satisfied and that any outstanding legal issues are addressed through the proper channels.

The seriousness of the original crime makes procedural integrity more important, not less.

WHAT THE LIVESTREAM WILL MEAN

The Pentagon’s decision is likely to generate further debate about the purpose and limits of capital punishment in the United States.

Supporters may see the broadcast as an expression of accountability. Critics may view it as an unnecessary spectacle that does little to improve public safety.

The central question is whether public visibility will provide meaningful information about the administration of justice or merely expose viewers to the final moments of a condemned person.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the proposed livestream has brought questions of punishment, deterrence, public accountability and human dignity into sharp focus. The lesson is that a justice system must respond seriously to grave crimes while maintaining clear standards for the exercise of state power.

Accountability requires lawful procedures and transparent institutions, but the public display of punishment should not be assumed to be an effective substitute for either.
