The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta has challenged a new generation of engineers to move beyond academic achievement and apply their professional skills to Nigeria’s most urgent development problems.

The charge came as the university inducted its 2025/2026 engineering graduates into the Graduate Membership of the Nigerian Society of Engineers.

FUNAAB WANTS ENGINEERS TO SOLVE REAL PROBLEMS

The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olusola Babatunde Kehinde, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Professor Olusegun Idowu, urged the graduates to combine professional competence with innovation and ethics.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the university identified transportation, construction, energy, water, manufacturing, agriculture and digital infrastructure among areas where engineering expertise remains critical to national development.

The university also highlighted food security, agricultural transformation, environmental sustainability, climate change and rural development as major challenges requiring engineering solutions.

The Dean of the College of Engineering, Professor Adedayo Badejo, urged the inductees to approach climate change and digital transformation as professional responsibilities rather than distant policy issues.

That message reflects the changing role of engineering in Nigeria.Engineering is increasingly intertwined with artificial intelligence, automation, renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, smart infrastructure and environmental management.

ValidViewNetwork can confirm that the induction was the 12th ceremony of its kind for engineering graduates at FUNAAB.

The ceremony took place on October 7, 2026, at the Professor Oluwafemi Olaiya Balogun Ceremonial Building.

NSE CALLS FOR CONTINUOUS LEARNING

The President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Engineer Ali Rabiu, represented by Engineer Dr Adekunle Musa, urged the graduates to continue developing their skills in emerging technologies.

Artificial intelligence, automation, renewable energy, digital technology and advanced manufacturing were identified as areas requiring sustained professional learning. The message was clear: an engineering degree is a foundation, not the end of professional education.

INDUSTRY LEADERS OFFER OPPORTUNITIES

Engineer Michael Oye of the Bank of Industry stressed the importance of value addition and converting Nigeria’s raw resources into finished products.

Engineer Dr Akintoye Akindele, Chairman of Platform Capital and special guest of honour, urged the graduates to develop curiosity, multidisciplinary thinking and persistence.

He also announced financial and career opportunities for outstanding graduates. The two best graduating engineering students, Yahyah Mubarak of Agricultural and Bio-Resources Engineering and Kelechi Chibundu of Mechatronics Engineering, received N1.5 million each.

The opportunities announced also included employment at Nexus Energy, invitations to Dubai, exploration of solar-energy development at FUNAAB and 10 internship scholarships.

Professional induction carries responsibilities beyond the ceremony itself. Engineers influence the quality of roads, buildings, water systems, power networks, agricultural machinery, digital infrastructure and industrial systems.

ValidViewNetwork authoritatively reports that Nigeria needs engineers who can convert technical knowledge into practical public value.

The challenge before the new inductees is therefore not merely to obtain professional recognition, but to demonstrate why engineering matters to a country seeking economic transformation.

A professional title becomes meaningful when it is matched by competence, integrity and measurable impact.
