OBUWA — A multi-agency security operation has successfully rescued twenty prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and one civilian who were abducted earlier along the volatile Owerri-Onitsha Expressway.
The victims were freed during a high-stakes, intelligence-led operation executed jointly by the military, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and other security architecture.
Operation Details
The graduates—who were traveling to their designated orientation camps from Ibadan before being intercepted by gunmen in Umunoha—spent anxious days in captivity following the ambush on their transport buses. The breakthrough came after security forces intensified coordinated tracking and surveillance of the kidnappers’ enclave.
According to security insiders, the rescued individuals have been safely relocated to a secure DSS medical facility where they are currently receiving medical evaluation and trauma support.
Ongoing Investigations
While the immediate physical safety of the victims has been secured, tactical teams have maintained aggressive pursuit patterns in the region. Authorities have pledged to track down any fleeing suspects linked to the kidnapping ring, which had initially sparked intense public outcry and high-level inter-state governmental appeals.
Further updates are expected as debriefing and administrative protocols continue with the relevant state authorities and the NYSC management.
