A 50-year-old murder suspect, Bethlehem Nwanlia, has died after reportedly slumping at the Bayelsa State High Court in Yenagoa during proceedings in the case against him.
Nwanlia was standing trial alongside two other defendants over allegations including conspiracy, kidnapping and multiple murder. He reportedly collapsed shortly after proceedings were adjourned.
Witnesses said he suddenly clutched his chest before falling unconscious.
Correctional officers, police personnel and lawyers reportedly attempted to revive him before medical personnel were called. He was later taken to a hospital for further examination.
JUDGMENT HAD BEEN ADJOURNED
The court had adjourned judgment in the case to October 27, 2026, before Nwanlia reportedly collapsed. The case involved allegations concerning the deaths of three people in Bayelsa.
The other defendants remain before the court. The exact medical cause of Nwanlia’s death had not been formally established in the reports reviewed.
ValidViewNetwork reports that Nwanlia died while the criminal case against him remained unresolved. His death therefore ends the proceedings against him personally, but does not determine the guilt or innocence of the surviving defendants.
