AYEKA, ONDO STATE — What was meant to be a solemn display of ancestral reverence turned into a nightmare of blood and shock when a prominent High Chief was cut down by a stray bullet during traditional funeral rites in Ayeka, a community in the Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The tragic incident, which unfolded on Monday, plunged the peaceful community into immediate chaos. According to eyewitness accounts, the traditional chiefs had lined up to perform customary final rites for a departed member of their council. Amid the procession, the atmosphere shifted from grief to horror when a firearm carried by one of the participants unexpectedly discharged.
The high-velocity projectile struck the unsuspecting High Chief directly in the head, causing instantaneous death.
- The Scene: Panic erupted instantly as mourners, family members, and onlookers fled for safety, abruptly halting the sacred ceremonies.
- The Aftermath: Local sources confirmed that the fatal blast appeared to stem from an accidental discharge during the handling of firearms—a practice occasionally integrated into traditional displays.
- Police Intervention: The Ondo State Police Command has stepped in to unspool the grim sequence of events.
Confirming the development on Tuesday, the State Police Spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, stated that law enforcement authorities had moved swiftly to secure the area.
”Investigation is ongoing. For now, one person has been arrested,” Jimoh disclosed, adding that a comprehensive probe has been launched to determine the exact circumstances that led to the weapon going off.
As residents of Ayeka continue to grapple with the sudden and violent loss of a revered community pillar, security analysts are raising renewed questions regarding the safety protocols surrounding firearm handling during public cultural events. The police have promised to release further updates as the investigation progresses.
