Nigeria’s National Register of Voters has risen to more than 103 million, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has announced ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The figure was disclosed following the completion of the three-phase Continuous Voter Registration, CVR, exercise and the commission’s final biometric clean-up.
INEC said the CVR exercise attracted 10,772,421 new registrants nationwide.
REGISTER NOW ABOVE 103 MILLION
The new figure represents the latest size of Nigeria’s registered electorate ahead of the 2027 elections. It provides an important baseline for the electoral process, although registration alone does not determine how many people will eventually vote.
Actual turnout will depend on whether registered voters collect their Permanent Voter Cards, remain eligible, turn out on election day and participate in the voting process.
PVC COLLECTION TO BEGIN
INEC has announced that nationwide collection of Permanent Voter Cards will commence on Friday. The commission’s announcement means the electoral process is moving from registration towards the next stage of preparing voters for the 2027 elections.
The commission is expected to provide further information on collection procedures and locations.
WHY THE NUMBER MATTERS
A voter register of more than 103 million places Nigeria’s 2027 election among the country’s largest electoral exercises.
But the headline figure alone does not tell the whole story. The geographical distribution of registered voters, the number of new registrations in each state, PVC collection rates, voter turnout and the eventual number of accredited voters will all become important as the election approaches.
The biometric verification and clean-up process is also significant because the credibility of an electoral register depends not only on its size but on the accuracy and integrity of the records it contains.
A NEW ELECTORAL BASELINE
The 10.77 million new registrations show substantial participation in the CVR exercise.
The challenge now shifts from registration to ensuring that eligible voters can actually complete the remaining steps needed to participate in the election.
For political parties and candidates, the new register provides a much clearer picture of the potential electorate they will be seeking to persuade.
For voters, the next practical step is to obtain their PVCs and verify their details where required.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the increase to more than 103 million registered voters marks another major milestone on the road to the 2027 elections. But the final significance of the number will only become clear when the register is fully operationalised, voters collect their cards and Nigerians ultimately turn out to exercise their franchise.
