A vigilant Uber driver’s quick thinking and a rapid police response have led to the arrest of two men found in possession of explosives after a suspected hijacking scare on the N1 North near Botlokwa in Limpopo early on Monday, 5 October 2026.
The Gauteng-based driver was ferrying two male passengers from Johannesburg to Ndzelele in Makhado when their behaviour raised his suspicions. Concerned he might be targeted in a hijacking, he contacted the police. Officers from the Botlokwa Prevention Unit raced to a local filling station along the busy national route where the vehicle had stopped.
On arrival, police found the driver still with his two passengers. A search of the suspects uncovered six water-gel explosives, three red-and-white insulated detonator cables and two pairs of gloves. The men, aged 49 and 29, were immediately arrested. The older suspect is from Lenasia in Johannesburg and the younger from Ennerdale, also in Johannesburg; both originally hail from the North West Province.
They face charges of possession of explosives and are expected to appear in the Morebeng Magistrates’ Court in the coming days.
The recovery highlights ongoing concerns about the illegal movement of commercial explosives, materials frequently linked to cash-in-transit heists, ATM bombings and other serious violent crimes across South Africa. Limpopo’s N1 corridor has seen repeated intercepts of such materials in recent years as police step up efforts against syndicates using the route.
Authorities have not released further details on the intended use of the explosives or any possible links to broader criminal networks. The case forms part of the South African Police Service’s continued focus on trio crimes and the disruption of high-risk offences.
The Uber driver’s decisive action prevented what could have been a far more dangerous situation and ensured the explosives never reached their destination. Police continue to urge the public, including e-hailing drivers, to report suspicious behaviour promptly.
