The National Union of Teachers has expressed deep frustration over the prolonged failure of the Federal Government to actualize the special salary scale approved for basic and secondary school educators.
Speaking in Abuja during the commemoration of World Teachers’ Day at Eagle Square, NUT National Deputy President Kizito Kalu noted that the much-touted salary structure—sanctioned during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari—remains unimplemented four years down the line.
The union emphasized that current economic hardships necessitate remuneration that properly reflects the weight of educators’ responsibilities. While acknowledging previous welfare adjustments, such as the extension of the retirement age, the leadership stressed that active teachers continue to grapple with subpar financial conditions.
Beyond fiscal demands, the union drew attention to deteriorating classroom environments, citing overcrowded facilities, deficient furniture, and a lack of critical instructional materials as major roadblocks to optimal educational delivery. The NUT has consequently charged the government to expedite action on the new salary regime to safeguard the dignity of the profession and elevate the standard of public education nationwide.
