The death of two twin sisters, both healthcare professionals, within two days of each other has left Professor Hadiza Abdullahi Usman, Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre, Nguru, Yobe State, facing an extraordinary family tragedy.

Her daughters, Dr Hadiyah Usman Abdullahi, a medical doctor, and Pharm Aidah Usman Abdullahi, a pharmacist, died within two days of each other following complications associated with sickle cell disease, according to reports confirmed in part by the Federal Medical Centre, Nguru.

The tragedy unfolded with Hadiyah’s death on Friday after she had spent about a week receiving treatment at FMC Nguru following a sickle cell crisis.

Her twin sister, Aidah, was receiving treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital around the same period. She reportedly recovered sufficiently to be discharged.

After attending her twin sister’s burial, Aidah reportedly visited Hadiyah’s grave. She subsequently fainted and was rushed to hospital, where she later died.

The sequence left Professor Usman mourning both daughters almost immediately, turning what began as the burial of one child into a second bereavement within days.

The Federal Medical Centre, Nguru, confirmed Aidah’s death in a message shared on its official social media platform, describing her as the “second twin” of the Medical Director.

A FAMILY DEEPLY ROOTED IN HEALTHCARE

The tragedy carries an additional poignancy because both sisters followed their mother into the healthcare profession. Hadiyah became a medical doctor, while Aidah qualified as a pharmacist.

Their mother, Professor Hadiza Abdullahi Usman, is a senior figure in Nigeria’s medical and academic community.

The official website of FMC Nguru identifies Professor Usman as its Medical Director and describes her as a Professor of Gynaecological Oncology and Reproductive Health with more than three decades of experience spanning clinical practice, academia, healthcare administration and community service.

She became the fourth Medical Director and Chief Executive Officer of FMC Nguru in November 2022 and is the first woman to occupy the position at the institution.

Her appointment was formally approved by the Federal Government in 2022, with the Ministry of Health describing her as an experienced medical professional who had risen through clinical and academic service.

She was promoted to the rank of professor in 2018 and has been associated with obstetrics, gynaecology, reproductive health and gynaecological oncology.

For a woman whose professional life has centred on caring for patients and advancing healthcare, the loss of two daughters who also chose healthcare careers has made the tragedy particularly painful.

A MOTHER’S WORDS BEFORE THE SECOND LOSS

Following Hadiyah’s burial, Professor Usman issued a message of appreciation to those who stood by the family.

She thanked relatives, friends, colleagues, professional associations, religious leaders, traditional rulers, government officials, FMC Nguru staff and other well-wishers who offered prayers, condolences and support.

She described the death of a child as a loss that words could hardly capture and prayed for Hadiyah’s forgiveness and eternal rest. She also prayed for strength and patience for the family to endure what she described as an “irreparable loss”.

At the time of that message, the family was grieving the death of one daughter. Two days later, it was grieving both.

THE SICKLE CELL CONNECTION

The reported deaths have also drawn attention to the continuing burden of sickle cell disease, an inherited blood disorder that can produce severe pain crises and serious complications.

The World Health Organisation says sickle cell disease results from genetic changes affecting haemoglobin and can cause blocked blood flow, severe pain, anaemia, stroke, infections and damage to vital organs.

The organisation estimates that millions of people live with the disease globally, with sub-Saharan Africa carrying a particularly heavy burden.

Nigeria remains one of the countries most affected by the disease. The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has described sickle cell disease as a major public health challenge requiring sustained investment in awareness, early diagnosis, treatment and access to quality care.

The circumstances surrounding Aidah’s final medical emergency should, however, be treated with care. Reports say she fainted after visiting her sister’s grave and was subsequently taken to hospital, but that sequence alone should not be presented as a medically established explanation for her death.

A PAINFUL LOSS BEYOND PROFESSIONAL TITLES

For the wider medical community, the deaths represent the loss of two young professionals. For Professor Usman and her family, they are the loss of daughters and twin sisters whose lives had developed along parallel paths in healthcare.

The story is therefore bigger than the titles attached to the deceased. Behind the doctor and the pharmacist were two daughters, born together and raised together, whose lives ended only days apart.

The family is now receiving condolences from colleagues, professional bodies, friends, religious leaders, traditional institutions and others who have identified with the devastating loss.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the tragedy has also renewed attention to the human cost of sickle cell disease, particularly in a country where the condition continues to place a heavy burden on families and the healthcare system.

For the bereaved family, however, statistics and professional distinctions cannot adequately describe the loss. A mother who spent decades caring for other people’s health is now confronting the unbearable task of mourning two daughters of her own.

The tragedy is a reminder that behind every medical statistic is a human life, and behind every loss is a family left to carry the consequences long after the headlines have faded.
