Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus has attributed the intense public scrutiny surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent benching and unused warm-up against Norway entirely to the forward’s legendary status in world football.
Speaking after Portugal’s recent UEFA Nations League fixture, Jesus addressed the friction that followed the 2-1 victory in Oslo, where the 41-year-old captain was sent to warm up for an extended period in the second half but ultimately left on the bench. The incident sparked widespread media fallout and a subsequent departure from the national team camp.
”Just because it was him,” Jesus remarked, emphasizing that the immense attention would not have materialized for any other squad member. “How many players warmed up today and didn’t come on? How many? Is there going to be a problem with any of them? No.”
The manager, who previously worked with Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, maintained that the episode stemmed from game-state management and tactical adjustments rather than any personal malice. With Gonçalo Ramos performing strongly and scoring during the match, Jesus opted against making the planned substitution.
Despite the subsequent fallout and intense media speculation regarding a potential lengthy disciplinary absence, Jesus has downplayed the prospect of a permanent rift. He insisted that their long-standing professional relationship remains intact and left the door open for the veteran forward’s return to future international squads, stressing that the issue can be easily resolved if the player wishes to continue.
