A commercial bus driver in Lagos narrowly escaped potentially serious legal consequences after National Drug Law Enforcement Agency operatives discovered illicit substances concealed inside a bottle presented as an energy drink parcel.
According to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, the driver had accepted the bottle as a waybill package for delivery from Lagos to Ondo State, believing it contained an ordinary energy drink.
The agency later discovered that the bottle had been used to conceal Colos and methamphetamine.
THE DRIVER’S DANGEROUS ASSUMPTION
The case illustrates a risk faced by commercial drivers and transport workers who accept parcels for customers without knowing what is inside.
Possession of illegal drugs can expose a person to criminal liability, even where the person claims not to have known the contents.
However, the circumstances of each case matter, including evidence of knowledge, possession and intent.
In this instance, NDLEA said its operatives traced the person who handed the parcel to the driver and arrested that individual. That development helped prevent the driver from being treated as the sole person responsible for the drugs, according to the agency.
ValidViewNetwork reports, the incident demonstrates why drivers should never accept sealed parcels simply because a customer provides a waybill or identifies the package as food, medicine or a beverage.
The NDLEA has warned transport workers to know the contents of parcels they carry.
THE WIDER DANGER
Drug traffickers can deliberately exploit innocent intermediaries because transport networks provide an easy way to move illegal substances across cities.
A driver who unknowingly carries drugs may still face detention, investigation and the cost of proving that he or she was not part of the trafficking operation.
ValidViewNetwork reports, the safest practice for transport workers is therefore simple: do not accept sealed packages whose contents cannot be independently established.
For the driver in this case, the agency’s decision to trace the sender may have prevented a much more serious outcome. For others, ignorance may not always provide protection.
