A medical evacuation aircraft carrying six people has disappeared off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts, while flying from Bermuda to Boston.
The Gulfstream G100, operated by Latitude Air Ambulance, lost contact with authorities early Saturday after departing Bermuda for Boston Logan International Airport.
Those aboard included two Canadian pilots, two Canadian medical personnel, a patient and the patient’s family member, according to reports.
The aircraft had been expected to land at Boston Logan at about 1:30 a.m.
EMERGENCY BEFORE DISAPPEARANCE
Preliminary flight data showed a sharp descent from roughly 24,000 feet to around 11,000 feet before the aircraft disappeared from contact.
Air traffic control recordings also indicated that the pilot may have experienced difficulty with the aircraft’s systems. A debris field was later found off Nantucket as search and rescue operations continued. Authorities have not yet established the precise cause of the crash.
ValidViewNetwork reports, the discovery of debris significantly changed the character of the search, although authorities still had to determine whether there were survivors and reconstruct exactly what happened during the aircraft’s final minutes.
The US Coast Guard deployed aircraft and vessels while Canadian and Bermudian authorities monitored the operation.
The incident has also drawn attention because medical evacuation flights are designed to transport patients who require urgent or specialised care, making reliability and communication particularly important.
INVESTIGATION AHEAD
The circumstances surrounding the aircraft’s descent, the reported communication difficulties and the weather conditions will be central to the investigation.
ValidViewNetwork reports, no definitive cause should be assigned until aviation investigators complete their work. For now, the priority remains the recovery operation and accountability to the families of everyone aboard.
