BEDBUG SIGHTINGS FORCE TRAIN CANCELLATIONS IN SOUTHERN ENGLAND

Train services operated by Southeastern in southern England have been disrupted after bedbugs were found in train driver cabs.

At least three services were reportedly cancelled on Friday following sightings that began at the West Marina traincare depot near Hastings.

The insects were first reported on September 22.

ValidViewNetwork reports that while the reports have raised fears of a wider infestation, Southeastern says the problem has so far been limited to two driver cabs and that no passenger areas have been contaminated.

“BEDBUG EXPRESS”

One affected train was reportedly nicknamed the “Bedbug Express” after a driver discovered insects on board. The train subsequently continued to operate with two carriages locked to separate the affected driver’s cab from passenger areas.

The episode has drawn attention because internal messages reportedly showed concern among drivers about the insects and their working environment.

Some drivers reportedly refused to board affected trains. One driver was even said to have requested a hazmat suit.

COMPANY DISPUTES WIDESPREAD INFESTATION

Southeastern has rejected the suggestion that its network is suffering from a widespread infestation. The company said only two driver’s cabs had been affected. It said no bedbugs had been found in passenger areas.

The operator also said no bedbugs had been identified on its High Speed 1 services. Two additional trains were reportedly taken out of service for inspection and returned after being cleared.

CLEANING AND INSPECTION

Southeastern said affected trains are thoroughly inspected before returning to service. Oly Turner, the company’s Head of Drivers, said staff had cooperated with the response. “We have a great relationship with our drivers, who have helped hugely in cooperating with us over these isolated incidents,” he said.

He added that trains were checked thoroughly whenever reports were received. The company said it continued to carry out cleaning across trains and stations.

WHY BEDBUGS CAUSE SUCH CONCERN

Bedbugs do not transmit diseases in the same way as mosquitoes, but they can cause itchy bites and become difficult to eliminate once established.

They can also spread by travelling on clothing, bags and other personal items.

For transport operators, the problem is therefore not simply passenger comfort. It also involves staff confidence, cleaning, isolation and preventing the insects from spreading between vehicles.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the key distinction in the current story is between confirmed sightings and a network-wide infestation.

Southeastern’s own account currently supports the former, while reports from staff have raised concerns about whether the problem could spread.
