The Unity High School Ago-Ika, Abeokuta Old Students Association has inaugurated its pioneer national executive officers, opening a new phase in the alumni body’s efforts to support the school.
The inauguration took place on Thursday. Kabiru Odusiji, a 1992 graduate of the school and former Secretary to Abeokuta North Local Government, emerged as the pioneer National President.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the new leadership is entering office with a practical agenda centred on school infrastructure, student support, teacher welfare and the consolidation of the alumni association.
“IT IS AN HONOUR”
Speaking after his emergence, Odusiji described his election as both an honour and a responsibility.
“It means a lot. First of all, I would like to thank all my members for honoring me, assisting me, and allowing me to be their leader. It’s an honor.” He pledged to work with former students, teachers and government institutions to improve the school. “I will try as much as possible to promote the school, develop the school, work with my elders and teachers, and complement the efforts of the government and the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology,” he said.
ALUMNI ROLE IN SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT
Odusiji said government alone could not shoulder every responsibility involved in school development.
“Government will build schools, pay teachers, and monitor students. We who have finished school as old students need to support the government by doing some small projects to assist the school so that they can achieve their goals,” he said.
He said teachers also needed support through teaching aids, financial assistance and better working facilities.
FOUR-POINT AGENDA
The new president identified four broad areas of focus:
— School infrastructure
— Student support
— Teacher support
— Organisational consolidation
The proposed projects include provision of chairs, books, pencils and stationery for students.
The association also plans to provide tables and chairs for teachers, construct toilets, paint school buildings and undertake roofing projects, depending on available funds.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the emphasis on relatively small but practical interventions reflects the association’s stated intention to complement government spending rather than replace the government’s responsibility for public education.
