Fela FC Thrash Future Heroes to Lift 2026 MTN Independence Cup

Fela FC delivered a masterclass performance on Friday, dismantling Future Heroes 5-1 at the historic Fela Field in Ipaja, Lagos, to clinch the 7th edition of the MTN Independence Cup.

Spearheaded by a stellar brace from Eto, the grassroots giants stamped their authority on the finale. Eto broke the deadlock in the first half to give his side a slender 1-0 cushion going into the break, before striking again shortly after the restart.

Although Future Heroes briefly fought back to narrow the deficit to 2-1, Fela FC’s depth and tactical discipline quickly overwhelmed their opponents. Faruq restored the two-goal cushion, Gbenga added a fourth, and a late fifth goal completed a comprehensive rout.

The newly crowned champions enjoyed an impressive campaign throughout the tournament, racking up 24 goals while conceding seven. Their path to glory included group-stage victories over Ayobo All Stars and Kemon FC, alongside knockout wins against Junior Milan, Grace FC, and a nervy semi-final penalty shootout victory over HS FC.

Future Heroes fought valiantly to reach the final—besting teams like Trenches Kids, Treasure FC, Austin Tigers, Bravo Gee, and Breeze FC along the way—but ultimately fell short against a ruthless Fela FC side.

Individual brilliance was also rewarded at the closing ceremony. Fela FC swept personal honors as Korede clinched the Best Goalkeeper award and teammate Sammy walked away with the Most Valuable Player (MVP) prize. Meanwhile, Lion Heart FC’s Okoye Onyekachi finished as the competition’s top goalscorer with 12 goals, and Agege’s Toma FC earned the Best Behaved Team accolade.
