In a monumental milestone for global representation and healthcare leadership, Nigerian-born dermatologist Dr. Bolu Ogunyemi has officially assumed office as the president of the Canadian Medical Association (CMA). Marking a historic first in the 159-year history of the organization, Dr. Ogunyemi stands out not only as the first Black physician to lead the national body, but also as one of its youngest presidents at age 39.
A graduate of Memorial University’s Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Ogunyemi’s journey epitomizes resilience, academic excellence, and a profound commitment to health equity. Having immigrated to Canada from Nigeria in his youth, he has steadily built a distinguished multi-disciplinary career spanning clinical dermatology, health systems improvement, and anti-racism advocacy. Prior to stepping into the national spotlight, he served as the inaugural Assistant Dean of Social Accountability at Memorial University, championing healthcare access for Indigenous, rural, and remote communities—including running regular outreach clinics in Labrador City.
As he guides Canada’s medical landscape through 2027, Dr. Ogunyemi aims to leverage his tenure to address systemic gaps in medical training, confront historical biases, and improve health outcomes for marginalized groups, immigrants, and refugees. His groundbreaking leadership continues to garner international acclaim, cementing a proud legacy of excellence that bridges nations and inspires a more inclusive future for medicine.
