The Enugu State Police Command is investigating the alleged murder of a young woman whose decomposing remains were discovered in the toilet of her boyfriend’s apartment in Olympic Layout, One-Day, Enugu, after neighbours forced their way into the premises following a persistent foul odour.
Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel, 30, was rescued from an angry mob and arrested by operatives of the Awkunanaw Division at about 6:30 p.m. on Monday, September 21, 2026. Police said preliminary findings indicate the victim, later identified by her family as Chinyere Susan Rosemary Ugwu (also known as ITCHINNYS Event Planner), was killed on September 19. Her body was allegedly wrapped in nylon and locked inside the toilet of Emmanuel’s residence.

The offensive smell of decomposition drew the attention of neighbours, who forced open the door, discovered the remains, and apprehended the suspect before police arrived. The body was evacuated to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while efforts continued to notify relatives.

During preliminary interrogation, Emmanuel reportedly confessed that the killing followed an argument over allegations of who had infected the other with HIV. He told investigators he struck the deceased on the head with a pestle, causing her death, before concealing the remains.
Commissioner of Police Mamman Bitrus Giwa ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a discreet and thorough probe and to ensure the suspect is arraigned upon conclusion of investigations. He also cautioned members of the public, particularly young women, to inform trusted relatives or friends of their movements and exercise care about whom they visit.

The victim’s family has since publicly identified her as Chinyere Susan Rosemary Ugwu from Nsukka Local Government Area. Her elder sister, Kenechi Maryam, said the family is seeking a thorough and transparent investigation. She questioned treating the HIV dispute as an established fact and noted that the suspect initially spoke of using a pestle but allegedly gave a different account involving a machete when asked about injuries to the head and neck.
The family described her as a hard-working, ambitious young woman with dreams and plans, and called for due process and justice without anyone taking the law into their own hands. They have also appealed for legal support.
Some early public speculation linked the case to ritual activity based on claims of certain items found in the apartment. Official police statements have not confirmed any such findings, focusing instead on the suspect’s account and ongoing inquiries.
As of early October, the State CID investigation continues. The African Women Lawyers Association (Enugu State Branch) condemned the killing as gender-based violence and stressed that no argument or medical allegation justifies taking a life, while urging full prosecution.
Police have reiterated their commitment to establishing the full circumstances of the incident. The case underscores broader concerns about domestic violence and the need for caution in personal relationships.
