A Nigerian pharmacist and doctoral researcher at McGill University, Canada, Chika Onochie, has secured a prestigious research grant worth up to CAD $100,000 from the Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ).
Onochie, a First-Class graduate of the University of Benin, is utilizing the funding to advance his doctoral studies into novel biomarkers for male fertility. Supervised by reproductive health expert Prof. Cristian O’Flaherty, his work addresses critical limitations in conventional semen analysis, which often fails to evaluate whether sperm are functionally capable of fertilization.
Reflecting on his journey, Onochie noted that his clinical practice in Nigeria exposed deep inequalities in reproductive healthcare, where infertility evaluations often disproportionately burden women while reducing male assessments to basic metrics like sperm count.
By identifying functional and molecular indicators—such as redox-induced protein modifications—Onochie aims to pave the way for more comprehensive diagnostic tools and balanced, couple-centered approaches to fertility care globally.
