The controversy centres on claims that an Indian hospital used an image or footage of former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar in promotional material connected with knee replacement surgery.
Lawyer and political commentator Aloy Ejimakor has also criticised the alleged use of the former military ruler’s image.
However, ValidViewNetwork gathered that the existence and precise content of the advertisement have not been independently established by all reports.
A report by 247ureports specifically noted that it could not independently locate the advertisement and that neither the hospital, the Presidency nor representatives of Abubakar had publicly responded to the claim at the time of publication.
The controversy is nevertheless connected to a documented part of Abubakar’s medical history.
The former Head of State has previously received medical treatment abroad for a knee problem.
The issue has now become part of the wider Nigerian debate over medical tourism, particularly the tendency of prominent Nigerians to travel abroad for specialist healthcare.
Sowore’s criticism focuses on what he considers the failure of Nigerian governments to build healthcare institutions capable of handling advanced medical procedures locally.
The political criticism is separate from the factual question of whether the hospital’s promotional material was authorised by Abubakar or his representatives. That distinction is important. ValidViewNetwork reports.
