The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reportedly begun laying out contingency frameworks for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, casting shadows over the joint “Pamoja” hosting bid by East African nations Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
Originally slated to run from June 19 to July 17, 2027, the historic three-way partnership has faced mounting scrutiny due to sluggish progress in stadium construction, accommodation, and vital logistical infrastructure. Reports indicate that premier football powerhouses such as Morocco, South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, and Ivory Coast have been sounded out as standby alternatives should the East African bloc fail to beat strict deadlines.
Despite the growing anxiety, CAF President Patrice Motsepe has strongly downplayed the reports, insisting during a recent inspection tour that the organization is entertaining neither a “Plan B nor a Plan C”. Motsepe maintained that preparations remain on course, though he conceded that significant workloads lie ahead.
Historical precedent shows CAF is no stranger to reallocating hosting rights when timelines slip, having previously stripped or moved tournaments from nations like Libya, Cameroon, and Guinea. With less than a year to go before the crucial windows close, upcoming inspection tours will determine whether Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania can retain continental football’s showpiece event.
