A former Cartersville police officer and evidence custodian is facing multiple felony charges after state investigators determined she stole money from the department’s evidence room.
Donna Jean Kelley, 61, of Cartersville was arrested Sept. 24 and booked into the Bartow County Jail, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. She is charged with violation of oath, first-degree forgery and felony theft by taking.
The Cartersville Police Department requested GBI assistance on May 27 after discovering money missing from its evidence room. Agents later concluded that Kelley took the funds while employed by the department as both a sworn officer and evidence custodian.
Authorities have not released the amount of money involved, how long the alleged theft continued, or the specific documents or actions underlying the forgery charge. It also remains unclear whether any pending criminal cases were affected by the missing funds.
The GBI said the investigation is ongoing. Once complete, the case file will be turned over to the Bartow County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
