A 39-year-old woman was arrested early on Monday after Western Cape police recovered 778 Mandrax tablets during a targeted search of a house in G-Section, Khayelitsha.
Members of the Anti-Economic Crime Task Team, working with the Counterfeit and Illicit Goods Policing Team, acted on intelligence about suspected drug activity at the address. Officers arrived at the property at about 07:00 and found the woman inside. A search of the premises turned up the tablets, which police value at an estimated street price of R45 000.
She was arrested on a charge of possession of drugs.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court once formal charges have been finalised.
The operation forms part of continued intelligence-led efforts by specialised units to disrupt the supply of Mandrax and other illicit drugs on the Cape Flats. Khayelitsha and surrounding areas have seen repeated seizures in recent months by the same teams. In late August, for example, officers recovered thousands of Mandrax tablets and other substances in separate raids in Mandela Park and Thaleni Square, with hauls valued in the millions of rands and resulting in further arrests.
Mandrax (methaqualone) remains a significant street drug in the Western Cape, frequently smoked with cannabis in the form known as a “white pipe.” Police say such recoveries help remove product from circulation and support broader efforts against organised drug dealing in high-prevalence communities.
No further details about the investigation or any additional recoveries at the G-Section address were released at the time of the announcement.
