Chiwetalu Agu Flags Gender Double Standards Over Sexual History

Veteran Nollywood actor Chiwetalu Agu has drawn attention to what he describes as uneven social consequences that men and women face for similar sexual histories, while urging people to weigh the potential fallout of their choices carefully.

In a video circulating widely on X since 27 September 2026, the actor observed that a man who has had sexual relationships with 30 to 40 women can still find a partner prepared to marry and settle down with him. By contrast, he said, a woman who has been with seven to ten men may be rejected solely on account of her past.

Agu pointed out that a man’s previous relationships often leave little visible evidence, whereas a woman’s history can become a lasting point of scrutiny. “People don’t always face the same social consequences for the same behaviour. The behaviour is the same, but the consequences are different,” he stated. He added that what works for one person may not work for another: “What favours Mr. A might not favour Mrs. B.”

The comments form part of a broader reflection on personal responsibility and unequal outcomes. Agu used the example of drug use to illustrate how circumstances and resources shape consequences. A wealthy person’s child who runs into trouble, he said, may be flown abroad for treatment and rehabilitation, while someone without comparable means could face far harsher results. “Don’t assume that because someone is doing something with you, that you will both suffer the consequences equally. We are all humans, but some humans have more to lose than others,” he warned.

He advised people to look beyond the immediate moment: “Always learn to look before you leap. Before you act, think about the consequences of your action. Think beyond the moment.” Wisdom, he concluded, lies not in knowing what one can do, but in recognising what one cannot afford to do.

The remarks have prompted online discussion about societal expectations around relationships, with some users endorsing the observation of double standards and others questioning the fairness or relevance of such judgments in contemporary Nigeria. Agu, a long-standing figure in Nollywood known for his distinctive dialogue and roles across decades of films, has previously commented on changing social norms around intimacy and relationships.
