US, China Cut Tariffs on $60bn Trade as Bigger Disputes Remain

The latest US-China trade truce has moved from presidential handshakes to supermarket shelves: toys, fireworks, kitchenware, meat, grains and medical equipment are among the goods now caught in the tariff bargain.

Fireworks, toys, kitchenware, meat, seafood, grains, coal and medical equipment have found themselves at the centre of the latest attempt by the United States and China to ease the economic pressure that has defined their trade relationship.

Washington and Beijing have released detailed lists of products that could receive lower tariffs under the latest trade arrangement reached after US President Donald Trump met Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The proposed tariff relief covers about $30 billion of imports from each country, bringing the total trade covered to roughly $60 billion.

The lists are among the clearest practical outcomes so far from the leaders’ meeting as both sides attempt to stabilise an economic relationship strained by years of tariff increases and retaliatory measures.

What is on the US list?

The United States has identified 77 entries covering goods imported from China. They include fireworks, household products, sporting equipment and toys.

The list also covers a range of everyday household and textile products, including plates, cups, bowls, tableware, blankets, bed linen, tablecloths and other goods.

The significance is that many of these are consumer products rather than strategically sensitive technologies.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer described the selected products as non-sensitive goods that could benefit from more favourable tariff treatment.

China opens the door to more US goods

China’s list is considerably broader. It contains 1,619 products, including meat, seafood, dairy products, grains, coal, timber and medical equipment.

Among the products listed are US beef, lobsters, flowers, sorghum, poultry fat, pet food, cosmetics and magnetic resonance imaging equipment.

Agricultural products are particularly important because American farmers have been among the sectors most exposed to the effects of the US-China trade dispute.

The arrangement includes key grains such as wheat, corn and sorghum. China has also agreed to tariff relief involving US coal, while both sides are setting up an agricultural working group intended to improve cooperation.

Not everything is covered

The announcement does not mean the broader US-China trade dispute has disappeared. Some of the most sensitive areas remain outside the latest arrangement.

Chips, electric vehicles and batteries are among the strategic sectors not covered by the reciprocal tariff list.

Disputes over technology, export controls and other strategic issues therefore remain. The tariff arrangement is instead focused on less sensitive products where both governments have room to reduce pressure without immediately resolving their larger disagreements.

About 90 per cent of the products covered by the reciprocal arrangement are expected to have tariffs reduced to most-favoured-nation rates, according to the reported terms.

The two sides have also extended their existing trade truce until January as negotiations continue.

What it means for consumers and businesses

For businesses, lower tariffs can reduce the cost of importing goods.

For consumers, the effect could eventually appear through prices, although the size of any reduction will depend on how much of the tariff saving companies pass on.

For American farmers, increased access to the Chinese market could provide a new outlet for agricultural products.

For Chinese manufacturers, lower US tariffs could make some household goods, toys and other consumer products more competitive in the American market.

The arrangement is therefore less a final settlement than a targeted attempt to reduce pressure in selected parts of the world’s most important bilateral trading relationship.

The two governments said the lists could be adjusted later, with amendments potentially made annually.

For now, however, the message from Washington and Beijing is clear: while major strategic disagreements remain, both sides are willing to carve out areas where trade can move with fewer tariff barriers. ValidViewNetwork reports.
