In 1990, Joanna Brittan was driven to a country estate to meet Mohamed Al-Fayed. Decades later, she would look back at that journey and see it through an entirely different lens.

Brittan’s account becomes more disturbing when she describes what happened after she was taken to Al-Fayed’s country estate in Surrey.

She said she was 25 at the time and had been driven there in a limousine after losing her job as a translator and personal assistant to UAE diplomat Ahmed Obaidly.

According to her account, the vehicle’s doors were locked during the journey and armed men wearing combat clothing were positioned around the estate when she arrived.

At the house, Brittan said she met Al-Fayed and had lunch with him. She recalled him shaving truffle over pasta while telling her that the delicacy was, pound for pound, more valuable than gold.

She also said she was taken to meet his children.

What happened next, however, left her deeply unsettled. Brittan said Al-Fayed told her that she was expected to live at the estate and work as a nanny to his children, apparently as part of an arrangement he and Obaidly had already discussed.

She said she laughed at the suggestion and questioned why Al-Fayed would not employ professionally trained nannies instead.

According to Brittan, the reaction was immediate. She said both men became angry and shouted in her face.

Then, she said, her memory stopped.

Brittan told the podcast that she has a complete blank in her recollection after that confrontation. She does not remember what happened next or how she eventually left the estate.

She later came to believe that she had been drugged during lunch and sexually assaulted by one or both men.

That remains Brittan’s allegation and interpretation of the unexplained gap in her memory, rather than an independently established finding.

She has nevertheless described the episode as the point at which she began to understand her experience as part of a much darker pattern surrounding Al-Fayed.

Her account is now being revisited in Al-Fayed: Who Looked Away?, alongside allegations from other women who have described encounters with the late businessman.

For decades, Mohamed Al-Fayed was associated with one of Britain’s most recognisable symbols of wealth, Harrods, as well as celebrity, royalty and the world of luxury.

She believes her experience forms part of a much larger story. That is where the podcast takes its central turn.

Rather than focusing solely on Al-Fayed as an individual, journalist Nicola Thorp speaks to survivors about what they say was a wider system that allowed allegations of abuse to persist.

The podcast description says hundreds of former Harrods employees came forward after Al-Fayed’s death with allegations of grooming, abuse and assault.

Those are allegations, not findings that should be presented as established fact.

Al-Fayed died in 2023 and was never tried in court over the allegations now being revisited.

But the number and nature of the accusations have generated renewed questions about the environment surrounding him and the response of institutions and individuals who were allegedly aware of concerns.

The series therefore moves beyond the image of the billionaire who owned Harrods and asks what happened to the people who say they were vulnerable to his power and influence.

Its title, Who Looked Away?, captures the central question running through the investigation.

If people around a powerful employer saw warning signs, what did they do with what they knew?

And if complaints were made, why did the alleged conduct continue? The podcast is being released weekly, with its first episode taking listeners back to Brittan’s 1990 encounter and the perspective she now brings to it more than three decades later.

The result is a disturbing examination of power, workplace vulnerability and the difficulty survivors can face when the person they accuse is wealthy, influential and surrounded by institutions. ValidViewNetwork reports.
