Passenger Dies After Jumping From Moving Bus at Ojuelegba, Lagos

LAGOS, Sept. 27, 2026 — A passenger has died after jumping from a moving commercial bus that subsequently crashed into a median pole at Ogunlana Junction, inward Ojuelegba, in the Surulere area of Lagos.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) disclosed this in a statement issued Sunday by its Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq.

The vehicle was identified as a commercial Volkswagen bus with registration number LND 130 XR.

A Driver Allegedly Drunk, a Desperate Escape

Findings show preliminary security reports indicated the driver was under the influence of alcohol and had been driving recklessly shortly before the crash, with motorists behind the bus said to have exercised caution to avoid colliding with the erratically driven vehicle.

In the resulting panic, a male passenger attempting to escape the uncontrolled bus jumped out and sustained grievous injuries on impact with the ground, injuries he did not survive.

LASTMA Moves to Secure the Scene

Checks by ValidViewNetwork confirm that LASTMA personnel on routine surveillance along the Ojuelegba axis mobilised swiftly after sighting the crash, instituting emergency traffic measures and clearing the deceased and the damaged vehicle from the road to avert a secondary collision.

Officers from the Area C Police Division, Ojuelegba, provided security cover, while the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency evacuated the victim’s remains.

A Renewed Warning on Drink-Driving

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the incident as another reminder of the potentially irreversible consequences of drink-driving, reckless motoring and operating mechanically defective vehicles.

He urged motorists to inspect their vehicles thoroughly before every trip, with particular attention to brakes, tyres and steering, while commiserating with the bereaved family and reaffirming the agency’s commitment to swift incident response.
