From Company Car to First-Class: Why I Walked Away from Comfort for a Degree

​For many young graduates, a job offer complete with an official car is the ultimate validation of years of hard work. In 2020, I found myself holding just such an offer. Yet, with a pen poised to sign the employment letter, I walked away.

​My journey began in 2018 when, rather than remaining idle while waiting for university admission, I enrolled at the Ogun State Institute of Technology (OGITECH), Igbesa. By 2020, I graduated with a Distinction and earned the title of Best Graduating Student in the Department of Accountancy. That foundation changed the trajectory of my life, opening doors to lucrative career paths.

​However, my ultimate goal had always been a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. Just two days before sealing my employment contract, a chance meeting with a mentor’s friend shifted my perspective. He noted that my polytechnic grades qualified me for Direct Entry into Lagos State University (LASU).

​A visit to the campus revealed daunting odds—approximately one in a thousand. Despite this, I chose a leap of faith, politely declining the job offer and securing an internship in the LASU Bursary Department to stay close to academia. That internship proved invaluable, allowing me to complete my professional examinations. Soon after, admission criteria shifted, reducing my Direct Entry chances to zero.

​Refusing defeat, I pivoted. I sat for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), studied rigorously, and reapplied. That resilience paid off with admission into LASU’s Department of Accounting, where I have now officially graduated with First-Class Honors.

​Reflecting on the choice made years ago, the sacrifices yielded extraordinary dividends. My academic and professional milestones now include a First-Class BSc in Accounting, Associate Membership in the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), and the ATSWA-ICAN National Subject Prize in Taxation. Alongside academic accolades, leadership roles such as serving as the 35th Auditor General of the LASU Students’ Union shaped my formative years.

​Achieving this required unwavering discipline, spiritual grounding, a profound commitment to delayed gratification, and an exceptional support system comprising parents, mentors, lecturers, and friends.

​Looking back, was turning down that company car worth it? Absolutely. True investment in oneself pays dividends that no starting salary can match.
