ABUJA — Early morning calm was shattered in the Federal Capital Territory on Sunday when a vehicle veered off the road and crashed into a gas retail shop near Liberty Junction in Kubwa, triggering a massive explosion and subsequent inferno.
The 6:15 a.m. incident sent thick columns of black smoke into the sky, creating widespread panic as residents across nearby neighborhoods reported shaking buildings. The violent blast heavily impacted a row of commercial shops and a container unit, leaving at least nine stores gutted by fire.
A police traffic post situated near the junction was also uprooted and structurally compromised by the shockwave, while sections of the surrounding drainage system were ripped open. The vehicle at the center of the crash was reduced to a charred metallic shell. However, emergency personnel successfully rescued the driver and a young child from the wreckage, with the driver immediately rushed to a medical facility for treatment.

A rapid-response coalition comprising the Federal Fire Service, the FCT Fire Service, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Nigeria Police mobilized to the scene. Firefighters worked for hours to contain the flames and prevent them from consuming adjacent commercial properties in the densely populated hub.
The disaster caused severe gridlock along the axis, drawing crowds of onlookers and commuters before security cordons were established. Authorities cleared the wreckage and restored order to the corridor by midday.
