British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband is facing intense political backlash following a widely publicized handshake with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The high-profile encounter, aimed at addressing the Middle East conflict and the reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, has drawn sharp rebukes from Conservative opposition figures. Shadow Foreign Office Secretary Tom Tugendhat condemned the meeting as an act of “grandstanding” that improperly legitimizes a regime engaged in domestic suppression and regional proxy conflicts.
Additional criticism came from Shadow Foreign Office minister Alicia Kearns, who asserted on social media that the gesture offered Tehran an unearned propaganda victory.
Despite the domestic outcry, the UK Foreign Office defended the engagement, emphasizing that Miliband used the dialogue to issue a stern warning regarding hostile operations and intimidation directed at British soil, specifically highlighting threats against the UK’s Jewish community and advocating for detained British nationals.
