LAGOS — Nigerian motorists woke up this week to a rare piece of good news on fuel prices, as the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and other marketers cut the pump price of petrol in Lagos, Port Harcourt and other major cities, riding on a fresh dip in global crude oil prices.
Checks by ValidViewNetwork confirm that the reduction follows a now-familiar pattern in Nigeria’s downstream sector this year, where every meaningful drop in international crude benchmarks has, within days, forced a corresponding adjustment in ex-depot and pump prices across the country.
A downstream market that now moves with Brent crude
Since the Dangote Refinery scaled up local production, the naira-denominated price of petrol has become far more sensitive to swings in international crude prices than at any point in Nigeria’s recent history.
Through much of 2026, geopolitical tension in the Middle East pushed crude prices up sharply, only for prices to retreat each time tensions eased — and marketers have generally followed the refinery’s lead in repricing.
ValidViewNetwork gathered that the latest cut is being felt most in Lagos and Port Harcourt, the two cities with the heaviest concentration of depots and filling stations, though independent marketers in other states are also expected to adjust in the coming days as competition forces their hand.
Transport unions and everyday commuters, for whom fuel costs feed directly into transport fares and the cost of virtually every good moved by road, have welcomed the development.
Industry analysts, however, caution that the relief could be short-lived: any renewed spike in crude prices, whether from fresh Middle East tensions or from OPEC+ supply decisions, could just as quickly reverse the gains.
ValidViewNetwork can confirm that marketers under the aegis of associations such as IPMAN continue to monitor the situation, even as they push, as they have for months, for prices to fall further before the reduction is felt as truly meaningful at the pump.
For now, Nigerians are being advised to expect prices to keep tracking the volatile mood of the global oil market for the foreseeable future. ValidViewNetwork reports.
