Sometimes, the most interesting part of a viral interview happens before the cameras start rolling.

That is the story veteran entertainer and activist Charly Boy has now revealed about comedian Isbae U’s widely discussed interview with former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Charly Boy disclosed that he helped connect the young content creator with the former president, saying he believed in the young people behind the programme enough to open the door for them.

How the unlikely meeting happened

Obasanjo’s appearance on Curiosity Made Me Ask was striking from the beginning.

The 89-year-old former president, who served as Nigeria’s president from 1999 to 2007, entered a format built around sarcasm, provocative questions, comedy and unexpected banter.

Isbae U even jokingly presented Obasanjo as his former employee, claiming that he had paid the former president’s salary, fed him and covered his accommodation at Aso Rock.

Obasanjo played along. He also admitted that he did not know several contemporary entertainment personalities, including Don Jazzy, Poco Lee and Carter Efe, turning the exchange into another round of humour.

But beneath the comedy was an unusual meeting between two generations of Nigerians who normally occupy very different public spaces.

Charly Boy’s role

According to Charly Boy, he deliberately helped create that meeting because he believed older Nigerians should do more than tell young people to succeed.

They should open doors for them. He praised Obasanjo for entering the young creator’s world rather than insisting that the interview conform to the traditional style associated with former presidents.

“A man of his age and experience sat down with a young man whose style dey completely different from wetin he is used to,” Charly Boy said.

That decision produced an interview that quickly became a talking point online.

During the interview, Obasanjo explained that his own opinion of Charly Boy had changed over time. He said he initially had little regard for the entertainer because of his unconventional appearance and public persona.

But that changed after Obasanjo visited the home of Charly Boy’s father, the late Justice Chukwudifu Oputa.

According to Obasanjo, he saw Charly Boy caring for his father and later witnessed the same devotion towards his mother.

That experience, he said, forced him to reconsider his view of the entertainer.
