Meet the Nigerian Surgeon Who Operated on a Patient 500km Away

For decades, one of Nigeria’s biggest healthcare problems has been geographical.

A patient may be in Abuja while the specialist needed to treat a complicated condition is in Lagos, London, Houston or another medical centre thousands of kilometres away.

That barrier was dramatically challenged this month.

Professor Obi Davies-Ekwenna, a professor of urology and transplantation and co-founder of RoboMed Global, led what the institutions involved described as West Africa’s first tele-robotic surgery, with a patient in Abuja and the surgeon operating remotely from a robotic console.

The procedure involved a patient at Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja with a kidney tumour. Davies-Ekwenna operated through a robotic system while the surgical team and equipment were connected across roughly 500 kilometres.

The procedure was described as a right radical nephrectomy, involving removal of a cancer-affected kidney.

The significance lies in the distance.

In conventional surgery, the specialist must be physically present with the patient. Tele-robotic surgery changes that equation by allowing the surgeon to control robotic instruments remotely, provided the technology, connectivity, surgical team and safety systems are all functioning properly.

Who is Obi Davies-Ekwenna?

Davies-Ekwenna is a specialist in urology and transplant surgery and is associated with RoboMed Global.

His work combines conventional surgical expertise with robotic technology, an area that has become increasingly important in advanced medical systems.

But the Nigerian breakthrough was not the achievement of one individual alone.

The procedure involved teams at Redeemer’s Health Village, Nisa Premier Hospital, RoboMed Global and technical partners.

Nigerian surgeons, nurses and engineers were among those involved. That teamwork may prove more important than the robot itself.

Can this change Nigerian healthcare?

Potentially, but technology alone will not solve Nigeria’s healthcare problems.

The medical team has already identified manpower and training as major challenges.

Redeemer’s Health Village plans to develop a robotic academy, while Davies-Ekwenna has spoken of training at least 150 surgeons within two years.

The larger ambition is straightforward: make specialist expertise available to patients without forcing every patient to travel to the specialist.

If that model can be expanded safely and affordably, a surgeon in one Nigerian city could eventually assist a patient in another.

That could also have implications for medical tourism.

Nigeria has long lost patients and medical spending to foreign hospitals.

Building the expertise and infrastructure to perform advanced procedures locally could help reverse part of that trend.

For now, however, the achievement should be understood for what it is: a demonstration that remote complex surgery can be performed in Nigeria. The robot did not replace the surgeon. It extended the surgeon’s hands across distance. ValidViewNetwork reports.
