The next phase of the artificial intelligence race may not be decided by the chatbot with the cleverest answer.

It may be decided by whoever controls the chips, data centres and computing power underneath it.

Alibaba announced Tuesday that it is developing an AI model with 5 trillion to 10 trillion parameters and unveiled a new AI chip designed to power large AI systems.

Why Nigeria Should Care

Nigeria is building an AI economy of its own, with developers, startups and increasingly sophisticated digital businesses.

But Nigerian AI companies still depend heavily on computing infrastructure controlled elsewhere.

Alibaba’s announcement shows how technology companies are trying to control the entire stack: chips, models and data centres.
