JOHANNESBURG — South African authorities have intensified their crackdown on gender-based violence following the grim discovery of nine women dead in the Kempton Park neighborhood east of Johannesburg over a two-month span.
Law enforcement officials confirmed the arrest of three individuals in connection with the killings, which have ignited national outrage and reignited fierce scrutiny over the safety of women in the country. The most recent victim, Jabulile Ntimba, was discovered on September 17, her body partly clothed on the roadside—a chilling pattern mirroring the previous eight discoveries.
Two female suspects, aged 31 and 38, appeared in the Boksburg Magistrate Court facing multiple charges, including murder, perverting the course of justice, and possession of a dangerous weapon. A third suspect, the brother of one of the detained women, was temporarily released due to insufficient evidence, while prosecutors announced that the remaining defendants will return to court for a formal bail application on October 1.
Deputy National Police Commissioner for Policing, Lieutenant General Tabelo Mosikili, indicated that preliminary findings suggest at least one of the incidents may have stemmed from a relationship-related dispute or potential love triangle. However, investigators are keeping an open mind as they probe whether a serial killer or an organized group is behind the string of homicides.
President Cyril Ramaphosa weighed in on the crisis during a press briefing, assuring the public that the government is mobilizing maximum resources to apprehend all culprits.
”We will be pulling out all stops to find these perpetrators,” Ramaphosa stated, committing additional financial allocations, personnel, and surveillance technology to combat the escalating climate of fear.
