Nigerian Scholar Found Dead at Home in South Africa; Family Seeks Answers

A 51-year-old Nigerian academic and Independent Senior Researcher at the University of Fort Hare in South Africa, Dr Ayodele Temidayo Odularu, has been found dead at her residence in the Eastern Cape Province. She died on 16 August 2026, with her family publicly confirming the news this week amid calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances.

Her younger brother, Dr Gbadebo Odularu, an applied economist, disclosed the death to Diaspora Tales on Wednesday following the launch of a GoFundMe campaign to support funeral arrangements and establish a lasting legacy initiative in her name. A family member who spoke on condition of anonymity said the death did not appear to result from natural causes, citing certain indicators observed at the residence, though precise details remain unclear and formal inquiries are continuing.

In a statement released through the fundraising page, the family paid warm tribute to the late scholar: “With hearts filled with gratitude for a life beautifully lived, we announce the passing of our beloved sister, Dr Ayodele Temidayo Odularu, who departed this world at the age of 51. Dr Ayodele was far more than a sister. She was a cherished daughter, aunt, friend, mentor, scholar, and a source of encouragement, compassion, wisdom, and strength to everyone blessed to know her. Her presence brought warmth into every room. She was known for her kindness, infectious laughter, generosity, resilience, and unwavering commitment to uplifting others. She had a rare ability to make people feel valued, heard, and inspired.”
Dr Odularu dedicated her career to scientific research and community-focused scholarship.

Affiliated with the University of Fort Hare (email verified at ufh.ac.za), she worked as a postdoctoral researcher and Independent Senior Researcher in chemistry. Her published work includes highly cited contributions on metal nanoparticles and their biomedical applications in cancer treatment, dithiocarbamates and their biological uses, electrospinning for anticancer drug delivery, molybdenum compounds as anticancer agents, and related topics in bioinorganic chemistry, sustainable materials, and antibacterial agents. She also contributed to research on educational access and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on disadvantaged students in South African universities.

Colleagues and the university community remembered her broader commitment. The University of Fort Hare held a memorial service on Thursday in her honour. Statements described her work as reflecting “a deep commitment to addressing challenges that affect everyday lives, including access to knowledge, educational opportunity, sustainable development, and solutions that empower underserved communities.”

The GoFundMe campaign, organised by her brother and created on 22 August 2026, aims to cover funeral and related costs while laying the foundation for projects promoting safe water access, educational opportunities for underserved groups, and community empowerment—values her relatives say defined her life’s purpose. As of recent updates, the fund had raised a modest portion of its target through donations from family, friends, and supporters.
