Mother Held After Allegedly Branding 7-Year-Old Daughter with Hot Knife

A 32-year-old mother is in police custody in Anambra State after residents and community security personnel rescued her seven-year-old daughter from what authorities describe as severe physical abuse involving a heated knife.
Ogechi Ofoma was arrested in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area, following the discovery of extensive injuries on her child, Oluebube Ofoma. The girl was pulled to safety on Sunday evening, 13 September 2026, by security operatives from the Ibollo Community in Awada-Obosi working alongside concerned neighbours who raised the alarm.

Anambra State Police Command Public Relations Officer SP Tochukwu Ikenga said the command received a report that evening about alleged child abuse and serious bodily harm. Preliminary findings indicated the youngster had suffered prolonged physical mistreatment, with some of the wounds reportedly caused by a hot knife.

The intervention by community members prevented further harm and allowed police to take immediate action. Ofoma was arrested at the scene as officers began their investigation.
Commissioner of Police Nnanna Oji Ama has already begun working with the Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare to secure urgent medical treatment, protection and welfare support for the child.

Police praised the vigilance of the Ibollo Community security personnel and residents, noting their swift response stopped the alleged abuse and enabled prompt official intervention.

Ikenga stressed that the probe would be thorough, professional and uncompromising, with the child’s welfare, safety and best interests remaining the top priority at every stage.

The case has drawn sharp attention to the ongoing challenge of domestic violence against children in parts of the state. Authorities continue to urge members of the public to report suspected abuse promptly so that vulnerable minors can be protected.
