Uju Anya is facing another storm.
Nigerian-born academic Dr Uju Anya has again found herself at the centre of a major controversy in the United States.
Carnegie Mellon University is reviewing recent social media posts attributed to her.
The university described the posts as “hostile and threatening”.
It also said it was deeply concerned about the material.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the university’s statement came after a wave of criticism over posts linked to Anya’s social media account.
The university said some of the posts wrongly suggested that Carnegie Mellon endorsed the views expressed.
She is already on professional leave
The latest controversy comes at a time when Anya is already on voluntary professional leave.
She is not scheduled to teach on campus during the 2026-27 academic year.
The university has not announced that she has been dismissed.
It has also not announced a formal suspension.
That distinction matters.
For now, Carnegie Mellon says it is reviewing the matter.
The controversy has nevertheless reopened questions about where academic freedom ends and professional responsibility begins.
This is not her first public controversy
Anya has faced intense criticism before.
In 2022, she attracted international attention after making highly critical comments about the late Queen Elizabeth II.
Carnegie Mellon then distanced itself from those remarks.
Her views on colonialism, Nigeria’s history and the Nigerian Civil War have also placed her in heated public debates.
The latest episode is therefore not happening in isolation.
It is the newest chapter in a long-running argument about Anya’s public voice.
Where does free speech end?
The case raises a difficult question.Universities often protect academic freedom because scholars must be able to challenge accepted ideas.
But universities also have institutional standards.
