The alleged deal ended with a severed finger, a police complaint and two conflicting accounts.
A bizarre case in Kano State has left police investigating an alleged deal involving ₦80 million and a human finger.
A man reportedly told police that he was promised ₦80 million to provide a human finger.
Unable to find someone willing to give up a finger, he allegedly cut off one of his own and handed it to the person who had allegedly made the offer.
Then, according to the police account, the money did not come.
He reportedly went to the police to complain.
The alleged recipient was subsequently arrested, while investigators recovered the severed finger.
The suspect tells a different story
The case became even stranger during questioning.
Police said the arrested man gave a different account of what had been requested.
According to the police, he claimed he did not ask for a human finger. He reportedly said he had asked for a forearm bone from a living person.
Investigators are now trying to establish what actually happened and whether either account can be substantiated.
The police have not established that the alleged ₦80 million offer was genuine.
Neither have authorities established the motive behind the alleged request.
Those questions remain part of the investigation.
When desperation meets a dangerous promise
The extraordinary case has attracted attention because of the extreme action the man allegedly took in pursuit of the promised money.
Rather than simply walk away from the alleged offer, he reportedly injured himself and then went to the police when the payment allegedly failed.
It is now for investigators to determine who made the request, what exactly was requested and whether the alleged transaction was connected to any criminal or occult activity.
For now, the competing accounts remain allegations.
