“Every Naira Counts”: NDC Launches Small-Donor Funding Drive for 2027

The Nigeria Democratic Congress has announced plans to raise campaign funds from ordinary Nigerians, with donations as low as N1,000, in a bid to limit the influence of wealthy individuals on the country’s democracy.

National Leader Seriake Dickson said the NDC is the only political party in Nigeria that does not receive funding from the government treasury.

A New Approach to Campaign Finance

ValidViewNetwork gathered that the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced plans to raise campaign funds from ordinary Nigerians, with donations as low as N1,000, in a bid to limit the influence of wealthy individuals on the country’s democracy.

National Leader Seriake Dickson disclosed this during an appearance on Arise News’ Prime Time on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, saying the party would encourage Nigerians to contribute as little as N1,000 towards its activities .

A Rejection of Moneybag Politics

“You cannot allow your democracy to be funded by moneybags and billionaires who are now trillionaires using government resources. You will continue to be oppressed,” Dickson said.

“So, we have got to help Nigerian poor people, oppressed people, break loose from the oppressors. We want a process by which Nigerians, ordinary Nigerians, can contribute N1,000, N2,000, as it happens all over the world,” he added.

Dickson, who represents Bayelsa West in the Senate, described the NDC as the only political party in Nigeria that does not receive funding from the government treasury.

Campaign Council Composition

Dickson also said the party was consulting on the composition of its presidential campaign council and would announce the members soon.

“We don’t want to do what the other party in government has done, publishing something and withdrawing it,” he said.

A Call for Free and Fair Elections

Dickson urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies and other relevant bodies to ensure free, fair and credible elections in 2027.

“We will take our case to the Nigerian people, and every vote will be fought for. Every vote will be contested,” he said.

A Lesson for Nigeria

The NDC’s small-donor campaign finance model is a reminder that democracy should be funded by the people, not by a handful of billionaires.

The same politicians who rely on moneybags to fund their campaigns will never allow their own children to be beholden to wealthy interests. Their families are protected.

For Nigeria, the lesson is clear: the influence of money in politics is a threat to democracy. The same leaders who spend billions to buy votes will never allow their own children to be denied the right to a free and fair election.
